AKSHITHA IS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

NYSESLAT expectations for Grades Kindergarten vs. Grade One

Although Kindergarten and First Grade students take the same test and the Kindergartners just go as far as they can on the test while Grade One is expected to complete all items the expectations differ. The KINDERGARTEN STUDENT should recognize and be able to write initial letter sounds and final sounds of common words. S/he should be able to form upper and lower case letters and copy a sentence. S/he must listen for time order cues and other simple listening such as prepositions of location (in, on, near). In addition to these tasks, the FIRST GRADER  is expected to write a descriptive paragraph using picture prompts. The writing should be adequately developed and include related detail and be organized. Mechanics should be employed. The FIRST GRADER should read sentence prompts such as: "What do you see?" and "Which signs tells you to go up?".
